But this is the last chance to make major edits to your project. After this draft, it's wise to have a whole team of people review your work to catch simple errors. This is when you go through your work and try to tweak the parts that could be better, where you make sure there are no loose ends or dangling parts that don't make sense or resolve. Lesson: The simplest version of a book is the best. It's hard and painful but so important to making your message clear and good. You might even kill entire chapters and sections. Here, you must cut superfluous phrases and nonessential details. Be ready for the criticism to come and decide ahead of time to apply it.Īll feedback is a gift, if you choose to see it that way. Ask a friend, peer, or professional editor (if you can afford it) to do her worst. You're too close to the work now and need to have a someone review it. You've gone through enough edits that you've added things, beautiful things. Draft #4: The Surgery DraftĪt this point, you need to start slicing and dicing, cutting your content down to its most essential message. Lesson: Excellence takes longer than we want. Now that you've got a structure, it's time to make this thing sing. From idea to idea, chapter to chapter, and sentence to sentence. This is the point at which you have an actual manuscript, something you can legitimately call a “work-in-progress.”Īt this stage, you will review you work as a whole and see if what you've said makes sense. Lesson: Before you can make it pretty, you have to make it work. Draft #3: The Rough Draft Will you commit to this? Here is where you abandon your project, go back to the drawing board, or decide to forge ahead. Does the story flow? Is the argument cohesive and consistent? Will people look at it and see something that resembles some kind of order?Īt this point, you need to make a decision. This is where you look at the structure of your project. Lesson: Your dreams must be bigger than your doubts. Save your cynicism and self-doubt for later. It's where you dream big and swing for the fences. This is your first try, what my friend Marion calls the “vomit draft.” It's where you get all your ideas on paper or screen or whatever. Here are the five drafts I use in any project, product, or book I create (including my upcoming book, The Art of Work): Draft #1: The Junk Draft But in the end, you will be better for it. It might break you and cause you to scream. If you have a project you want to share with the world, chances are it's going to take more of you than you want to give. The truth is the most creative, successful people I know are also some of the most disciplined - in their own way. We have this idea that writing a book is a magical process involving only inspiration but nothing that looks like hard work. He'd written a rough draft and wasn't sure what to do after that. Not too long ago, a friend asked me to read his book. The line is about fist and a half long, from lower right to upper left. Fainter Mercury, even fainter Regulus, and puny Mars form a straight diagonal line a little way above Venus. Look for Venus about three fists at arm's length to its lower right. Spot the crescent Moon in the west-southwest about 30 minutes after sunset. ■ In late twilight, look about a fist at arm's length above the Moon for Denebola, Beta Leonis. The top of the kite is bent slightly down, as if something hit it. The Kite, rather narrow, extends upper right from Arcturus by 23°, about two fists at arm's length. Its pale ginger-ale tint always helps identify it.Īrcturus forms the bottom point of the Kite of Boötes. ■ As summer progresses, bright Arcturus moves down the western side of the evening sky. They used to be rare, but they're becoming more common as Earth's atmosphere changes, probably due to the extra methane at very high altitudes as a result of global warming. Noctilucent cloud season runs from mid-May to mid-August (in the Northern Hemisphere). Would you recognize pearly, night-glowing noctilucent clouds if you saw them? They're the most astronomical of all cloud types, with their extreme altitude and formation on, among other things, meteoric dust particles. ■ At the end of these long summer twilights, look low in the northwest and north. ■ Now the crescent Moon is easier to spot low in the west early twilight, helping mark the way to three planets as shown above. Low in bright twilight, the waxing crescent Moon passes over Mercury, Venus, and fainter Regulus and Mars. ■ About 20 minutes after sunset, start looking very low in the west-northwest for Venus, lesser Mercury, and the thin crescent Moon as shown below. The Teapot will tilt farther and farther for the rest of the summer - or for much of the night if you stay out late. ■ With the advance of summer the Sagittarius Teapot, in the south-southeast after dark now, is starting to tilt and pour from its spout to the right. If you have very sharp eyes, can you resolve the Mu pair without using binoculars? They're oriented almost exactly the same way as Lambda and Upsilon. The fainter one is indeed the nearer one.īetween the Cat's Eyes and the Teapot's spout are the open star clusters M6 and especially M7, showy in binoculars.Ī line through the Cat's Eyes points west (right) by nearly a fist-width toward Mu Scorpii, a much tighter pair known as the Little Cat's Eyes. Both are blue-white giants, 500 and 700 light years away, respectively. And the cat has a bleary eye Upsilon is fainter than Lambda (they're magnitudes 2.6 and 1.6). They're 0.6° apart and canted at an angle the cat is tilting its head to the right. These are Lambda and fainter Upsilon Scorpii, known as the Cat's Eyes. Look for the two stars especially close together in Scorpius's tail. How low depends on how far north or south you live: the farther south, the higher. ■ The tail of Scorpius is low due south after dark, to the lower right of the Sagittarius Teapot. See page 54 of the July Sky & Telescope, which includes lots of telescopic sights around it. It's 4° above (northwest of) Sagitta's tail and currently poses upside down. The Arrow points lower left past the Dolphin's nose. Look for it closer to Altair's upper left. Sagitta, the Arrow, is smaller and fainter. He's leaping leftward just below the summer Milky Way. Little Delphinus is about a fist at arm's length lower left of Altair. ■ Now that Altair is getting nice and high in the east-southeast, and with the evenings moonless, it's time to greet the Dolphin and the Arrow. That may be why this image (which has a resolution of only a few pixels) appears mottled. The faster a star spins the stronger its magnetic activity will be, including starspots. The disk of Altair, imaged by the CHARA interferometric array on Mt. It spins so fast that, using interferometry, astronomers were able in 1999 to confirm that it is widened around its equator into a very ellipsoid shape. The third star of the Summer Triangle is Deneb, less bright, left of them.Ībove Altair by a finger-width at arm's length is little Tarazed, 3rd magnitude and orange, which helps to identify it.Īltair is a fast-spinning, white type- A star, somewhat larger and hotter than the Sun, only 17 light-years away. It's the second-brightest star on the eastern side of the sky, after Vega higher to its upper left. ■ Altair shines high in the east-southeast after dark. It's more difficult but you can use a PC running Windows 10 and gibMacOS to download any of these macOS versions. What if I don't have a macOS download eligible Mac or Hackintosh yet ? You can upgrade them to El Capitan for free if you have one that is still on Snow Leopard. MacBook Pros from late 2008/09 or newer will also work well. again, the minimum of 2GBs of ram applies here if using a 2007/08 Mac mini. If you have a 2010 Mac mini or iMac still on Snow Leopard you can upgrade it to Yosemite for free. They all have a Core 2 Duo CPU and at least 2GB of ram which is required for Lion through the Mojave version of macOS. If you would like to buy, borrow or rent a used Mac mini to create your installer, the 2010 models are the best choice. How to create a bootable installer for macOS. The Mac must also be using macOS High Sierra or later, the latest version of macOS Sierra or the latest version of OS X El Capitan. Using USB 2.0 ports and mechanical drives can really slow down the creation process. To download an installer suitable for creating a bootable installer, use the App Store or use a web browser to download from a compatible Mac. When you create your USB installer on an older Mac expect it to take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. The only other way to update Safari is by upgrading the macOS to a newer generational version as High Sierra to Catalina, for example. Old Safari versions won't pass the security requirements for most sites. You should also download the newest Chrome or Firefox browser version that works on your older Mac. Lion for example, requires a 64 bit Intel processor to install that edition of Mac OS X. Your older Mac or Hackintosh must have at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and be able to run OS X Snow Leopard or a newer version of OS X to use Unibeast for Catalina or other versions of macOS. After that, copy your custom OC EFI folder to the USB's EFI partition. Find your Sierra installer in Applications. Click through all the prompts that come up.ģ.
