Every movement and touch hurt-it was like when his foot fell asleep and trying to move or stand on it felt like pins and needles, but through his whole body-and he shivered violently in Tracey’s arms despite the sun still shining above them. It wasn’t like Gary had never gotten a little too close to a stun spore before, but he didn’t remember it feeling this bad. Gary let out a pained whine and Tracey was startled by how pitiful the sound was. It didn’t look like Gary was in any condition to walk, and it’d be painful to even try, so as gently as possible, Tracey slid one arm beneath Gary’s back and the other beneath his legs and picked him up. Thankfully, he also knew exactly what to do. Tracey knew what the effects of a vileplume’s stun spore looked like-he knew what they felt like, too. The way Gary groaned in protest of the movement, and the sight of the dark flush across his face, erased any doubt of what had happened. Still holding his hand, Tracey eased Gary’s arm away from his face. “Not… exactly,” Gary replied, voice strained. The pressure on Tracey’s hand was light, weak, but felt deliberate. “Gary, can you hear me? Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.” He took one of Gary’s clammy, trembling hands. He was curled into himself, arms shielding his face, but what Tracey could see was pale. “Gary!” Tracey rushed to his side, kneeling beside him. Gary lay motionless on the ground nearby. Umbreon brought him to an alarming scene-Ash’s bulbasaur was telling off a pair of vileplume, who looked thoroughly chastened at this point. Tracey followed Umbreon’s lead without hesitation. And when Tracey started to feel like it had been too long without crossing paths with or hearing a word from Gary, he started to worry.Īnd then a familiar umbreon ran to Tracey, barking urgently. There had been no reason for Tracey to think Gary wouldn’t be fine-Gary was smart and capable, and helped with these sorts of things often enough.īut accidents happened, and pokémon could be unpredictable no matter how long you’d worked with them. Splitting up with Gary to look after the pokémon more efficiently hadn’t seemed like a mistake at the time.
